Our Mission

Our Values

The World Affairs Council of New Orleans (WACNO) cultivates international understanding and civic engagement by bringing global perspectives to local communities. Through expert-led programs, dynamic discussions, and community outreach, we make complex global issues accessible and relevant—empowering people to engage thoughtfully with foreign policy, international relations, and cross-cultural exchange.

We create welcoming spaces where diverse voices connect, respectful dialogue thrives, and informed citizens emerge—building a compassionate, globally engaged community ready to meet tomorrow’s challenges together.

At WACNO, our work is guided by a set of core values that shape how we engage with our community:

We believe in open and respectful dialogue, fostering spaces where people can ask questions, exchange ideas, and engage with complex issues without fear of judgment. Respect and civility guide every discussion, enabling genuine understanding.

We embrace diversity and global perspective, valuing the inclusion of different voices, experiences, and worldviews. By connecting local concerns to global challenges, we reveal the interconnectedness of our world and deepen insight through cross-cultural understanding.

We uphold nonpartisan education and evidence-based knowledge, committing to present multiple perspectives on international issues without promoting partisan agendas. Our programs are grounded in scientific research and empirical evidence, ensuring credibility and trust.

We promote cross-cultural connection, encouraging empathy and respect through dialogue, cultural exchange, and shared experiences. These connections build bridges, reduce division, and strengthen both local and global communities.

We champion civic engagement and shared learning, empowering individuals to become informed, compassionate citizens. Learning is a shared journey at WACNO, where participants, speakers, and organizers contribute equally to collective growth.

The World Affairs Council of New Orleans (WACNO) is a proud member of the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA)

WACA serves as the national office for the network of more than 90 member organizations in 40 states working to engage and educate Americans across the country about global affairs and foreign policy.

WACA traces its earliest roots to 1918 when the League of Free Nations Association was formed to support President Woodrow Wilson’s efforts to achieve a just peace. The founding members, among them John Foster Dulles and Eleanor Roosevelt, worked to promote awareness of critical international issues affecting the U.S., and nurture grassroots citizen involvement in international affairs. By 1947, the group operated as a national organization that was composed of a network of independent community councils. In 1986, the National Council of World Affairs Organizations national office was established in Washington, D.C. This office evolved into the World Affairs Councils of America.
