Our Programs
Academic World Quest™ Competition
Academic World Quest™ is a youth education program of the national network of World Affairs Councils.
The Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) competition allows high school students to showcase their knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, and culture in a fast-paced team competition. Each team will consist of four students in grades 9-12, and questions will be asked from various categories based on a study guide provided by the World Affairs Council. The competition also contributes to the national Common Core State Standards Initiative by promoting reading comprehension skills for informational texts.
If you are interested in learning more about AWQ and WACNO, or if you are ready to pledge one student team (maximum of two teams), please contact us
Speaker Series
The Speaker Series Program provides an opportunity for first-hand exposure to prominent statesmen, diplomats, journalists, educators, scholars, business, and military leaders. Ample time is allowed for questions and interactive discussions with individuals who are making today’s headlines and affecting the policies and initiatives of the global village.
The program is an immersive experience that empowers individuals to be active participants in the dialogue surrounding our shared global future. As a bridge between the audience and influential thought leaders, the program catalyzes intellectual curiosity, promotes informed citizenship, and contributes to a more interconnected and informed global citizenry.
Coffee & Talk
The WACNO Coffee & Talk program offers an engaging platform for thoughtful discussions on international affairs in an informal, conversational setting. Usually held in the morning at a local coffee shop, each session features distinguished guests such as diplomats, educators, journalists, and scholars who share insights and perspectives on current global events and international relations.
Every meeting provides a unique opportunity for participants to gain first-hand understanding of world issues, interact directly with the speakers, and exchange ideas with other community members interested in foreign affairs. The program fosters an atmosphere of open dialogue and intellectual exchange, strengthening the connection between global topics and the local community.
Great Decisions
Free and open to the public, Great Decisions is designed to create a more informed and engaged citizenry by bringing people together to talk about global affairs and US foreign policy. This initiative aims to foster an informed and engaged community. Our facilitators provide insightful overviews, sparking balanced and thought-provoking discussions.
Each meeting is a journey into the complexities of our interconnected world. Our facilitators ensure an inclusive space where diverse perspectives converge, encouraging us to think critically about the issues that shape our planet. As we explore topics ranging from geopolitics to environmental sustainability, we're not just discussing global affairs — we're actively shaping our understanding of the world. It's not just a meeting; it's an opportunity to be part of a community dedicated to being well-informed global citizens.
PubNite
Members of the World Affairs Council of New Orleans come together for "PubNite," an enjoyable networking event. The gathering follows a Dutch treat format, creating an inclusive atmosphere. This event offers a wonderful chance for members of all ages to connect, fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse array of shared interests among them, encompassing cultural, linguistic, geographic, civic, professional, and academic realms.
It's a casual and welcoming occasion where individuals can forge meaningful connections and explore the rich tapestry of common ground that unites our dynamic community.
Dining Internationally
Dining Internationally is a signature cultural program of the World Affairs Council of New Orleans (WACNO) that uses food as a lens for global understanding. Celebrating the city’s rich culinary diversity, the program highlights locally owned international restaurants and the chefs and cultural voices behind them—bringing global stories to local tables.
Through curated restaurant visits, chef-led conversations, and tastings, participants explore how food reflects history, migration, identity, and diplomacy. They engage directly with international perspectives, discovering how cuisine can broaden horizons, foster dialogue, and deepen cultural understanding.
At its core, Dining Internationally promotes food diplomacy, using shared meals to bridge cultures, reduce barriers, and strengthen global connections. The program exemplifies WACNO’s mission to foster cross-cultural understanding and community engagement.
